A Louis XVI gilt bronze-mounted white marble vase mantel clock,
the dial signed à Paris – circa 1785

Height: 41.5 cm. (16 ¼ in.)    Width: 21.2 cm. (8 ¼ in.)    Depth: 15.3 cm. (6 in.)

 

The vase-shaped body is supported by two caryatids and rests on a stepped white and black marble base.

 

Comparative Literature

An identical clock was in the Collection of Erich von Goldschmidt-Rothschild, sold Hermann Ball & Paul Graupe, Berlin, 23-25 March 1931, lot 357.

Four similar clocks in hard-paste Paris porcelain are known:

  • One in the Jones Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the dial unsigned
  • One in the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris
  • One formerly in the collection of John Pierpont Morgan, sold Parke Bernet, New York, 8 January 1944, lot 490
  • One formerly with this gallery, illustrated in Pierre Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française, Paris, Editions de l’Amateur, 1997, p. 216, fig. B, signed Godon, Horloger du Roy et de la Cour d’Espagne, 1786
