The inkstand is surmounted by a reduction of Jean-Antoine Houdon’s famous sculpture, Le baiser donné or the
The Kiss Given. Houdon first mentions the work in 1772 and lists it in his inventory of works in 1779 and
1780. With its sensual depiction of two young lovers embracing tenderly, it met with great success. A signed
and dated marble from 1778 is in the collection of Stewart and lynda resnick, illustrated in A. Poulet, Jean-
Antoine Houdon, Sculptor of the Enlightenment, Washington, D.c., 2003, pp. 236-241, no. 41. Versions in
different mediums were produced by Houdon’s studio and others as well as being incorporated into
decorative works of art as is the case here. A patinated bronze example attributed to the bronzier Pierre-
Philippe Thomire (1751-1843), a former pupil of Houdon’s, is in the Wallace collection, london (inv. S217).
