OSMOnD – circA 1770-1775
The dial and movement signed J.B. Du Tertre à Paris, the case stamped OSMOnD
Height: 34 cm. (13 ½ in.) Width: 15.9 cm. (6 ¼ in.) Depth: 15.9 cm. (6 ¼ in.)
in the form of a truncated column which contains the circular dial with roman numerals for the hours and
Arabic numerals for the minutes indicated by engraved gilt brass handles. The cylindrical movement has an
anchor escapement and silk thread suspension and strikes the hours and half-hours by means of a count-
wheel on the back-plate.
cOMPArATiVE liTErATUrE:
robert Osmond, one of three bronziers of this name, was responsible for the design of this model and his
drawing is preserved in the Bibliothèque Doucet, Paris (no. 54). A gilded version 12 pouces high cost 198
livres.
The model was clearly popular at the time as a number of examples have survived:

The dial with the days of the month signed Pochon à Paris
Height: 59 cm. (23 ¼ in.) Width: 25.5 cm. (10 in.) Depth: 14 cm. (5 ½ in.)
The enamel dial indicates the hours, minutes and days of the month in Arabic numerals with engraved gilt-
brass and blued steel hands. The circular movement has an anchor escapement and silk thread suspension
and chimes the hours and half-hours by means of a count-wheel mounted on the back-plate.
